It's not surprising to miss a bus, boat, train or flight regardless of how well you could be prepared. Some of the reasons which could lead someone to miss a flight include traffic jam, accident, flat tire or confusion on the reporting time.
To miss a flight is very stressful especially if it’s for the first time and you don’t have any alternative. There are a couple of steps to follow which Jumia Travel would like you to know and consider once you face the situation.
Contact your local travel airline. The first thing to do once you discover that you will be late or miss the flight is to contact the airline company. Check your flight ticket or website for a phone number to call and know if there is any assistance you could get.
Check terms and conditions on ticket you have booked. Every airline company has got its policy on how it operates. Some of them board their passengers to the next flights on the same or next day while others charge extra money for no-show. So it's better to be aware of those policies.
Don’t panic. You are not the first human being to be left behind by a flight so stay calm and think of what to do next. You will be able to make better decisions on whether to look for another flight so as to catch your itinerary as planned or postpone it. Since what is done is done you cannot do anything about it.
Ask staffs for other alternatives available. If you have no clue on what to do next or contacts of your airline company, please ask the staffs at the airport to help you. Not all the companies have offices at the airport so ask people around with a greater experience.
Pay extra money to cover the loss. If you think that you have important stuff to take care of where you are going, then you have to add some extra amount of money for no-show. This will be much easier and helpful to you rather than to cancel or postpone a flight at all. So in such situations it's advisable to have extra cash or credit card to issue emergence payments.
Check out on other flights heading to your destination. Usually almost all airports have departure boards, so check out on another flight heading to your destination. That could provide you an opportunity to book for another flight if you need to be where you want to go.
Use that time to explore other things. To miss a flight doesn’t mean that other things should stop. For example, if you miss a flight from Arusha to Dar es Salaam, try to look and visit the tourist attractions around such as Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area or a trip to Mount Kilimanjaro just a few kilometers away.
Inform your hotel early. If you had booked a hotel or arranged a pick-up at airport upon arrival to your destination, inform the hotel that you will be late or arrive on the next day. This will help avoid negative implications or incurring extra costs.
Learn from your mistakes. Making mistakes is part of learning in our lives. Hence, make sure that you do not miss your flight next time. If you were late because of traffic jam then make sure you leave earlier than before; and if you had mixed up the time of your departure, it's better to set a reminder.
In general, there are a lot of reasons which might lead to a missed flight to both passengers and airline companies. Sometimes you could miss a flight because of technical problems from the company which in such cases travelers are compensated. But if you miss a flight on your own personal reasons, take responsibility and rectify the mistake to avoid a repeat of the same.
