Among the things which employees love to hear is public holidays. Because they will get a chance to stay at home and it doesn’t mean that they’re lazy, but the truth is those days don’t come frequently just like normal weekends.
In Tanzania such a situation doesn’t happen in every month but this April is among them. A survey conducted by Jumia Travel, reveals some of the reasons behind this month’s popularity.
Karume Day. This day is commemorated every April 7 annually to remember the death of the late and the first President of Zanzibar Island (Unguja and Pemba) who was shot dead in 1972 in Stone Town, Unguja. In honoring him, the people of both Zanzibar and Tanzania mainland don’t go to work and instead celebrates Karume’s good deeds especially by leading people of Zanzibar through the revolution which overthrew unjust Arabs’ administration. This year, Karume day will fall on a Friday, hence giving an opportunity to people to rest for three days consecutively including weekend. For people with short-term plans will be able to do so such as have a road trip.
Easter Holidays. Most christians in Tanzania and worldwide are in a lent season (lasts for 40 days) which commenced on 1st of March and ends on 13th of April. Easter preparations start to take place on Good Friday, April 14, while the main day will be April 16 and followed by Easter Monday on April 17. Therefore, you can observe how people are eagerly waiting for those four-day holidays with lots of plans to be accomplished. Union Day. Every April 26, the people of Tanzania celebrate Union Day, the day when there was a unification of Tanganyika and Zanzibar (Unguja and Pemba) in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania. As always, this day will also be a public holiday meaning that people will be staying at home to commemorate the great work conducted by the founders of the two nations, the late Mwl. Julius Kambarage Nyerere and Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume to unify people regardless of their cultural diversity.
Apart from those public holidays, this month will also have some occassions expected to take place such as:
April Fools’ Day. This day is celebrated every 1st of April whereby people and several institutions play harmless practical jokes and spreading hoaxes. Although this day is very famous among the people of different nations, there is no country which has already declared it as a public holiday. To most countries including Tanzania, the jokes and pranks are due 10 AM in the morning. People celebrate this day by throwing jokes and pranks on their colleagues while the victims are called April fools. So be very careful to not fall into the trap.
Nyama Choma Festival 2017. For party people, April is their month since the Nyama Choma Festival 2017 is expected to take place on Saturday 29. This event brings together all the meat lovers around Dar es Salaam City to have a taste of different kinds of barbecue as well as enjoy drinks and breathtaking performances from several bongo flava music artists. The event has managed to attract thousands of people from time to time and keeps on spreading to other regions.
So, that's what’s happening in April; if you did not know, now you do. Most people have already planned for it but if you had not it’s not too late. Visit Jumia Travel to explore your nearest destinations to go with your loved ones during those short breaks including Easter!
