Ngorongoro: The must visit place in East Africa

By Jumia Travel Tanzania

It seems like 2017 is going to be the year of tourism and hospitality in Tanzania, as until now a couple of popular figures across the world have already visited. Tourist attractions which have scored high by being visited mostly are the Serengeti National Park, and Ngorongoro Conservation Authority (NCA).

It all started with the Smith’s family earlier in March, the Hollywood film actor, Will and his wife Jada Pinkett when they jetted in Arusha via the Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) and toured Serengeti. On arrival, they were surprised to meet American supermodel, Chanel Iman, who had arrived earlier than them.

A few weeks later, tourism and hospitality welcomed a popular figure from among the strongest nations in the world, Israel, the former Prime Minister, Ehud Barak who visited both Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

So far those were good signs for the industry since the beginning of the year, and we expects their testimonials will bring more tourists.

But here we must pose a question to ourselves, why is NCA the tourist attraction most favoured and most prefered by any visitor to Tanzania? Jumia Travel has cracked out the puzzle and the following are the reasons why tourists can’t resist this destination.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area was formed as a result of the volcanic explosion and forms unflooded and unbroken deep caldera. It is 20 kilometers across, 600 meters deep and 300 kilometers squares.

The following are the tourist attractions to explore and enjoy while you are in Ngorongoro:

People and wildlife living together. For over 200 years back the Maasai people arrived and lived in the area. Their traditional way of life has made them to live in peace and harmony with the wildlife. Until now, there almost 42,000 Maasai pastoralists living in NCA with their cattles, donkeys, goats and sheep. During the rains they move out of the area and return back in dry season. The Maasai are allowed to move in with their cattles for water and grazing but not live or cultivate there eventhough are free to roam around the area.

The Crater and Wildlife. The large crater, unflooded and unbroken of Ngorongoro was formed due to the volcanic eruptions some three millions years back. UNESCO declared NCA as the World’s Heritage Site in 1979 and is the only place on the earth’s surface with a substantial number of human beings, livestocks and wildlife live in peace and harmony. It’s not surprising to find Maasai pastoralists’ cattle graze along with the zebras in Ngorongoro.

Remains of early mankind. Ngorongoro is where the Olduvai Gorge can be found, according to the historians the remains of early human kinds have been located. Here is where archeologists Dr. Louis and his wife Mary Leakey excavated skulls of early human being, Zinjanthropus, who lived some 1.75 million years back. Their research revealed gradual increases in brain sizes as well as the complexity of stone tools they used.

Other tourist attractions; apart from the above mentioned tourist attractions, there are still lots of enjoyment to indulge in the NCA such as follows:

Lake Ndutu and Masek; these two lakes floods from the water up hills, its waters are too salty for human consumption.

Oldonyo Lengai; this is the Maasai name which means ‘Mountain of God,’ it is situated just a few meters away from Ngorongoro. It is the only active volcanic mountain in the area which erupted back in 2006 and most recently in July 2007.

The Shifting Sands; the remarkable black dune was composed as the result of ash from the volcanicity of Oldonyo Lengai. It has been pushed slowly to westwards across the plains at the rate of about 17 meters in a year.

Olkarien Gorge; this is another important area as it accommodates the Ruppell’s Griffon Vulture. The best moment to visit this place is during the months March to April when vultures are breeding.

Flamingos and Bird watching; Flamingos are common birds in the area due to the presence of two lakes. Apart from them, there are lot of other bird species which can be found during different seasons.

Walking Safaris; it won’t be worth enough to visit the area without taking a Safari around the NCA. With the help of tour guides make sure you spend every single minute of your time while you are there to physically visit all the places.

For sure this place is the modern-day Eden as branded by most of the tourists. And it is very surprising to see people travel thousands of kilometers from across the world to see all those natural wonders while they are just a few hours from where you are living. It doesn’t cost millions of money to visit Ngorongoro, it’s easily accessible and accommodation has been simplified by Jumia Travel.
