The World Bank Group President, Dr. Jim Yong Kim, will visit Tanzania from March 19-21, 2017.
During his visit, Dr. Kim will meet with President John Pombe Magufuli, to discuss key engagements of the strategic partnership between the Republic of Tanzania and the World Bank Group. Dr. Kim will also spotlight World Bank Group-supported investments in transformational infrastructure, and highlight the need for continued investments in human development, especially education quality and investing in the early years.
This will be Dr. Kim’s first visit to Tanzania. The partnership between the World Bank Group and the Government of Tanzania began in June 1960 when the International Finance Corporation, the World Bank Group’s private sector arm, invested $2.8 million in the Kilombero Sugar Company. In 1962, the World Bank provided $4.6 million to then Tanganyika for the School Construction Equipment Project, followed by $5 million for the 1965 Agriculture Credit project.
The World Bank is currently financing 23 national projects amounting to $3.6 billion, in addition to seven regional operations through which Tanzania accesses $551 million in financing, reaching a total commitment of $4.3 billion. The bulk of this support (22 percent) focuses on the transportation sector, followed by urban development (20 percent).
A physician and anthropologist, Dr. Kim has dedicated his career to international development. For more than two decades, he helped under-served populations by improving healthcare in countries around the world. Dr. Kim became the 12th President of the World Bank Group on July 1, 2012, after serving as President of Dartmouth College, a pre-eminent center of higher education in the United States. Dr. Kim is a co-founder of Partners In Health (PIH) and a former director of the HIV/AIDS Department at the World Health Organization (WHO).
