Acacia Buzwagi Gold Mine donated 285 textbooks to 200 students of Bugisha Secondary School, being part of the miner’s efforts towards educational development in the country.
The donation was part of the sponsorship from the company’s CanEducate program.
One of the factors that contribute to student’s failure in their form four and form six examinations is insufficient textbooks in schools, and the cost of textbooks is very high compared with the parents or guardian financial capacity, the gold mining company said in a statement.
CanEducate was established in 2010 with the main focus of sponsoring secondary school students from vulnerable families. The program works in a manner where all funds donated by employees are matched by Acacia creating a significant pool of funds for the program. The funds are used to pay for school fees, uniforms, and school items for the students and textbooks.
At its inception, the initiative only covered 158 students surrounding the Bulyanhulu Gold Mine. However, with the generous donations of Acacia employees, contractors, and well-wishers, the program has managed to grow to cover more than 800 from schools around Buzwagi.
At Buzwagi the initiative involves 3 secondary schools; Bugisha Secondary School, Mwendakulima Secondary School, and Nyasubi Secondary School that have delivered the best performers in both form 4 and 6 examinations.
The donation at Bugisha Secondary School was facilitated by Buzwagi Community Relations Officers Yunia Wangoya and Antonia Kiondo.
The handover was done in the presence of the school teachers, parents, and students whereby all expressed their gratitude to Acacia for facilitating the much-needed assistance.
