Top 5 areas hit by floods every year in Dar es Salaam

By Jumia Travel Tanzania
Before visiting Dar es Salaam, it is advisable to understand the weather patterns in order to avoid inconveniences.
While the city has long sunny and hot seasons, it also has long rainy seasons, with some areas experiencing flooding. Jumia Travel highlights five areas which are hit by floods whenever it rains.

Jangwani
The popularity of this area is that whenever it rains, without even watching the news people know there are floods. The area is affected much by floods due to being along the Msimbazi river which receives its waters from other feeder streams from the City and pour onto Indian Ocean just a few meters away. For quite a long time there has been a back and forth between the government and people about vacating the area. The main reasons which make the dwellers to refuse to leave the area is because of its proximity to the city center as well as availability of social services such as transport at their doorsteps. People who are living in that area just walk by foot to and from their workplaces.

Tandale
Heavy congestion of housing and people in this area have made difficult for water to flow into its course. To greater extent this area is in a wetland and that’s the main reason it is hit by floods whenever it rains. Kindly do not be deceived to stay there due to its lower standards of living. Usually, “cheap can be expensive,” as the old saying goes. This means that, it is true that life at Tandale would be very affordable but you’ll never imagine the costs you will incur when floods hit you.
Buguruni kwa Mnyamani
This area is located at Ilala Municipality with a lot of commercial activities such as popular markets in Karume, Buguruni and Kariakoo. Apart from being surrounded by a lot of a business hub, not all the areas in Buguruni are safe to live in especially at Mnyamani. As the same as areas which are mostly hit by floods, it is congested with residential areas which have totally blocked the infrastructures. Overflooding is what happens when water courses are blocked. Hence, if you love yourself kindly do not try to go and live there even if you are offered a free room to stay.
Msasani Bonde la Mpunga
Due to its proximity to the city center, this area has attracted a large number of commercial buildings such as hotels, apartments, offices, supermarkets, conference centers as well as cinema halls to mention a few. To some higher percentages, the residential areas are a mixture of very poor and medium housing structures. This area is also among of those which affected by floods due to being located in a wetland. Most people are reluctant to vacate this area because of availability of essential social services, job opportunities as well as its proximity to the city center which is just 6 km away. So just brace yourself that floods are inevitable if you decide to live there.
Bonde la Mto Kigogo
Kigogo area is located along the river Kigogo which receives its waters from the feeder streams within the city. Floods to people living along this area is not a surprising thing to them because of establishing their houses just few meters away from the river banks. When there is heavy rainfall the river overflow and spread to nearby areas which at greater extent have been invaded by residential areas. People living in this area are a mixture of very poor and middle class, life is not expensive as well as it is not far to city center.
I bet you must have noticed same factors in common which forces people to live in those areas. Almost all of them have got assurance of social services, low standard of life as well as proximity to the city center whereby most of the dwellers work. But those are not enough reasons to endanger your life; Jumia Travel would like to advise you that social services should follow people and not otherwise.
