In an effort to make sure every Tanzanian own a smartphone at an affordable price, Jumia’s ‘Mobile Week’ which will last until 30th of March, features the sales of mobile devices only unlike its other campaigns such as ‘Black Friday’ that features a variety of products.
Jumia has a strong belief that mobile phones have a huge impact in socio-economic lives of most Tanzanians across the country. In today’s world a mobile phone is not a luxury device as it used to be before, rather than an important tool that simplifies daily routines of individuals. For instance, nowadays mobile phones are not only used to access or disseminate information but also are useful in mobile money services, payment of tons of bills such as electricity, water, fees, fines as well as a driving force towards the e-commerce sector.

Addressing on the importance of the campaign not only to customers but also in the mobile sector in general, Chief Executive Officer of Jumia in Tanzania, Zadok Prescott said that the continuous growth of the economy has made it to become very important as it also intrigues the development of other industries.

“This campaign is one of its kind especially because it focuses on one particular product,” says Prescott, who notes that the growth of the mobile sector has been greatly contributed by the presence of a number of mobile and telecom companies across the country. “Jumia has discovered that mobile devices are sold at higher prices that an ordinary customer cannot afford. Mobile Week is the solution to this challenge, as we believe that by the end of the campaign a lot of customers will be owners of smartphones from their favorite brands. The prices during this week are super low and in addition to that, there are a lot of offers and discounts for customers every single day of the campaign,” he explains.

There still remains a remarkable number of Tanzanians who remain skeptical of online shopping, regarding it as unsafe.  “Jumia aims at changing customers’ shopping habits while saving their valuable time and costs that could be invested in other productive activities,” says the Jumia boss.

Recently, Tanzania recorded an increase in the number of mobile phone users up to 40 million, that is equivalent to a penetration rate of 72% of the entire population, 10% less that of Africa that stands at 82%. The availability of competitive prices and incentives in the mobile market has played a significant role in the affordability of devices. But most importantly, the additional value of mobile products by various telecom companies has been the pushing factor towards encouraging Tanzanians to own mobile devices.

Mobile phone subscribers across Tanzania are largely utilizing the devices to access financial services. However, they are becoming technology savvy as there is a tremendous increase in the number of internet users and its penetration as most of them access the internet through smartphones. Early in 2018, it was revealed that the number of internet users has reached 23 million with a penetration of 45% in 2017, from 7.5 million and a penetration of 17% in 2012.

Urging customers to take advantage of the remaining days of the Mobile Week campaign, the CEO of the leading e-commerce platform in Tanzania concluded by saying that, “the aim of the campaign is to make sure that the number of mobile phone users continue to grow. And to make sure that becomes a reality, I urge customers to effectively use the massive offers and discounts available.”
