The recently appointed CEO of Kenya Airways (KQ), Sebastian Mikosz has been appointed to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) board of governors.
Mikosz interim appointment will stay on until the close of the IATA Annual General Meeting to be held in Sydney, Australia from 3rd -5th June, next year.
Mikosz appointment is an opportunity to bring knowledge, experiences and passion as well as inclusion in the aviation industry.
Mikosz was appointed in May 2017 after taking over from Mbuvi Ngunze. He has previously worked as Polish Airlines CEO, with over 20 years experience in executive management in both public and private sector. The move sought to help revive the loss making KQ.
Last week the United States granted Kenya Airways approval to operate direct flights between Kenya and the US paving the way for the national carrier to finalize other preparations including seeking other approvals as well as identifying the airport in the US that it will operate flights and applying for a slot in the airport.
In the letter dated June 5th this year, Brian Hedberg, the Director of International Aviation says 21 days in which interested persons has been asked to show cause why Kenya Airways should continue being denied the permit to operate direct flights to the United States lapsed.
The only impediment standing in the way of KQ beginning the direct flights lies with the President of the United States, who under 49 U.S.C. can disprove the permit for KQ to fly the lucrative route. In June, Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said Kenya Airways would commence direct flights to the United States in April next year.
