ZANTEL INTRODUCES FREE SOCIAL MEDIA PACKS, TARGETING YOUTH

Tanzania’s data market leader -Zantel, has introduced free social media packs for its customers, specifically targeting youth who are seen as frequent users of social media.
Making the official announcement in Dar es Salaam, Zantel’s Chief Executive Officer Mr. Benoit Janin said all Zantel customers subscribing to the company’s daily, weekly and monthly internet will be entitled to free WhatsApp, Facebook as well as free music from Mdundo music streaming services.
He said, “We have proudly unveiled the new services today in our bid to expand and provide much more innovative services and products to ensure that our customers connected to Zantel continue to enjoy our innovative service from our widest 4G network across Tanzania”.
Explaining further on the newly launched service, Zantel’s Head of Data & Device, Hamza Zuheri said “For all Zantel customers buying any of our daily, weekly or monthly packages which are; -Tshs500 for 500MB, Tshs1000 for 1.2GB, and Tshs1500 for 2.5GB respectively will also be eligible to enjoy these free services. This of course, is for customers with data enabled devices”. For our non-smartphone customers, they still can get highly discounted smartphones sold in selected Zantel shops in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar for a lot less for them to enjoy the new offer,” he said.
He said after conducting a thorough market research, they realized that the youth love music and there wasn’t anyone offering this in the market and so they decided to introduce a better offer for their subscribers by adding free music streaming with  Mdundo Music app.“
Mdundo Music Application is one of Africa’s biggest music platform that allows customers to easily stream all genre of music online for free. The application holds the biggest catalogue of music in the region with over 200,000 songs from about 40,000 artists in the region. Zantel believes that this will suit the youth as a lot of them are culturally centered on music and this would entice them.
He added that the new service will be available on almost all mobile operating systems like Android, iOS for iPhones, Blackberry and Nokia Symbian60-phones.
Martin Nielsen, CEO at Mdundo explains “Zantel customers can access all the Mdundo catalogue including our very popular DJ mixes, West African as well as East African music. Tanzania is a very fast growing market for us and we hope that this initiative will help killing the huge rate of piracy in the country and give customers a reason to enjoy even more music than before”
Zantel’s new Free WhatsApp, Facebook and Mdundo Music service joins a long list of other services that the company has pioneered in its digital innovations recently. They include the recent launch of 4G LTE networks both in mainland and the Isles that provide Zantel customers with high speed internet connections, The recent ‘Zantel Madrasa’ service launch which facilitates Muslim teachings to its customers via mobile phone through the interactive voice response, SMS as well as the Mobile App.
On Zantel’s investments, Janin said they have invested almost US $10 million on network Modernisation and the roll out of new sites and according to him, the upgrading of all sites covering Stone Town and the whole of Urban West Region has just been achieved. The exercise is also ongoing now in Unguja and Pemba Islands and expected to be achieved in May.
