CRDB BANK’S TEMBOCARD ADVANCES INTEREST-FREE LOAN OF UP TO TSHS 50M

CRDB Bank has teamed up with MasterCard International to launch the first credit card to enable customers to borrow money hassle free. “This is a truly credit card in the country. The credit attracts no interest for the first 30 days," he told reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday adding the 30 days would be a grace period and after that it will attract an interest of five per cent,” the Bank Managing Director, Dr Charles Kimei said. He said that the credit card come in two platforms namely TemboCard World Rewards and Tembo- Card Gold Credit card. However a customer can have both debit and credit cards. The Gold Card enables customer to get the loans of up to Tshs 30 million while World Reward goes up Tshs 50 million. However, not all customers who are eligible to have the credit card will have the maximum limit. Other will fall as low as Tshs 1.0 billion depending on customer’s behaviour. “The limit to borrow depends a lot on the customer account behaviour analysis,”

Mobile Money Transactions in Tanzania Reach TZS 50 Trillion in 2016-17

Between July 2016 to April 2017, a total of 1,444.6 million transactions valued at TZS 49,997.1 billion were transacted in mobile money transfer in Tanzania, the Central Bank (BOT) indicates in its Monthly Economic Review of May 2017. This is 13.9% more than TZS 43,867.9 billion that were transacted via 1,217.70 million transactions during the similar period of the preceding year. BOT explains that the interoperability among the four major mobile payment services providers has substantially contributed to the increase in transactions across network operators and therefore reducing the cost of mobile financial services. The number of registered active users of mobile phone financial services was above 17.3 million by the end of April 2017. Meanwhile, the retail payment systems such as the usage of card payments, automated teller machines and point of sale (POS) increased slightly.
