In a move meant to remove the blind and virtually impaired people from the streets and give them jobs, the Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade) plans to establish a plant for producing sewing machines for them.
TanTrade Director General, Edwin Rutageruka said plans for the establishment of the plant were aimed at providing jobs to blind and virtually impaired people to help them earn income. He said during the opening of industrial product exhibitions at the Mwalimu Nyerere International Trade Fair (DITF) grounds in Dar es Salaam.
In supporting the call to establish industries, TanTrade will set up a sewing machine plant for the blind and virtually impaired people to help in removing them from the streets, he said. He said for the time being TanTrade had 16 sewing machines and through the plans, it plans to have 50 machines by next industrial product exhibition so that the earmarked people could benefit from the sewing skills.
He said they would train seven blind and virtually impaired people from every district in Dar es Salaam and they expect that they would impart the knowledge to others. The TanTrade boss said this year’s industrial product exhibitions were held for the second time following last year exhibitions which were successful in linking traders and manufacturers and provide training to stakeholders on quality production of industrial goods.
He said the exhibitions were also vital in promoting buy local products campaign so as to help in building of an industrial economy. The Lindi Regional Commissioner (RC), Godfrey Zambi said he had attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition to learn so that he could impart the knowledge to the people in Lindi Region.
He said he would not like to see Lindi Region was left behind in industrialisation and would therefore want to see that they promote establishment of industries in the southern coastal region. He said the problem in doing trade was on quality and how to penetrate on the global market and as a result, relevant institutions need to help local manufacturers to improve on quality.
He called on the Tan- Trade to train local farmers on better ways of processing sunflowers, sesame oil, ground nuts and coconut to improve processing plants for the crops. The second industrial products exhibition began yesterday after a successful one which was held in the similar grounds last year.
According to TanTrade, the aim of the trade exhibitions was to complement government’s ambition of transforming the country into a semi-industrial economy by 2025
