Zantel has unveiled the first ever special Sim card bundled with airtime and data package for tourists, dubbed ‘Tourist Pack’ which will enable foreign travelers in Zanzibar to make local and international calls in six European countries including; UK, Spain, Denmark, Italy, France and USA at affordable rates.
Launching the special pack at a press conference in Zanzibar yesterday, Head of Zantel in Zanzibar, Mohamed Mussa Baucha said, the new pre-paid starter pack for tourists, offers minutes for international and local calls as well as Internet bundles for the first month of use.
The special package, he added, seeks to enable tourists have a simpler and convenient way of staying connected with their family and relatives abroad.
According to him, Zantel decided to come up with the product for tourists after conducting a thorough research which indicated that most tourists were in dire need of reliable mobile phone services, including internet connection during their stay in Zanzibar.
“When tourists land in Zanzibar the first thing they would often ask for is the availability of data, Wi-Fi, and internet connection, which means telecom service is very important for them and this is what prompted us to introduce this service to cater for their communications demand,” said the Zantel Director.
He said the new starter pack rewards customers with 10 minutes (Zantel to Zantel), 10minutes (Zantel to other networks), and 5 minutes for international calls in two countries; UK and Spain. The Zantel subscribers of Tourist Pack will also be offered 10minutes for international calls in four countries, including France, Italy, Denmark and USA.
The newly-introduced starter pack also provide customers with 4GB data package and once the package expires, the customer can subscribe to a range of other regular airtime and data packages offered by Zantel.
He added that each Sim card for this service will be sold at $10 or its local equivalence and the subscriber will have to follow all registration procedures as per the TCRA regulations.
He revealed at the conference that Zantel pays Tshs 2billion in tax to the government of the Zanzibar every month and Tshs 24billion annually.
He also said that Tourism sector’s contribution to the Zanzibar annual budget is around 25 and 27 percent, and stressed the need to improve the service sector in order to attract more visitors to Zanzibar.
